Free Malaysia Today, October 9, 2017.

The Home Ministry today listed the reasons for banning 22 books recently.

Its secretary-general, Alwi Ibrahim, said in a statement that the 22 publications were banned totally in Malaysia because their contents could be detrimental to public order, alarm the public, breach existing laws, damage public morals and harm public interest.

Among the banned publications are 10 translations of the al-Quran in Bahasa Melayu, English, Chinese, Arabic and Korean which did not include the original texts.

“The 110th meeting of the Fatwa Committee had decided that no translation of the al-Quran should be published and distributed without the original texts,” Alwi said.

The translations carried the titles “al-Quran Translation”, “The Meaning of The Glorious Quran Korean Edition”, “The Meaning of The Holy Quran (Chinese Translation Edition)”, “The Meaning of Al- Qur’an (The Guidance for Mankind)”, “The Quran Modern English Translation (640 pages)”, “Terjemahan Al-Quran Bahasa Melayu”, “The Quran Modern English Translation (431 pages)”, “Terjemahan Al Quran Bahasa Melayu”, and “Translation of The Quran”.

Alwi said translations of the al-Quran must carry the original texts because the translations might not be accurate since they needed to follow specific rules in the Arabic language.

He also explained that the ban on the sexual intercourse techniques publication “Tantra: The Search For Ecstacy” was because it contained explicit drawings and images of sexual positions which offended virtuous values and social mores in Malaysia.

The book, entitled “Aku _______, Maka Aku Ada!” was banned because it contained confusing factors that promoted the Syiah belief and liberalism, which could mislead Muslims who followed the Ahli Sunnah Wal Jamaah school of belief.

The titles “Sekitar Masalah Tariqat (naqsyabandiyah)” and “Meniti Jalan Hidayah: Menuju Toriqah Khotmul-Auliya” were banned because their contents included practices of mysticism which clearly were against the teachings of Ahli Sunnah Wal Jamaah.

“Islam dan Iman: Aturan-Aturan Pokok” and “Islam Kemodernan Dan Keindonesiaan” contained elements that would confuse Muslims and contravene the shariah determined by the al-Quran and the hadis….
